Point of View

The point of view of Divorcing shifts between the first person and third person point of view. The novel features two separate first person narrators. Sophie is the narrator of the majority of the first-person narration, however, Rudolf also features as a first-person narrator for a brief section of passages in the novel. The narration of the novel does not rule out the possibility that the third-person narrator is also Sophie, as it is implied that certain sections of third-person narration contain content that is identical to the book that Sophie is writing. But the third person narrator never directly identifies as Sophie. Nevertheless, the third-person narration of events is largely told from Sophie’s perspective, and contains observations of Sophie’s internal thoughts and feelings.
