Corruption among the factions

The idea of the faction is that one group of people would focus on traits to serve a purpose in the daily lives of a civilization. In Beatrice's world, there are five factions with responsibilities that include protection, law, government, care-giving, and education. Civilization prior to the establishment of the factions was in trouble and the factions were formed to address what people saw as fundamental flaws in their city. The problem is that some of the factions eventually lost sight of their true missions, becoming corrupt and jealous. For example, the Dauntless manifesto mentions taking care of the weak and protecting the city from outside threats. They were originally dedicated to the service of their fellow man but became cruel in their pursuit of strength.
