Chapters 28 through 31 Summary

In chapter twenty-eight, Beatrice sneaks away to the Erudite compound where she searches for Caleb. She finds him and relays her mother's message. Caleb says there's "something big" happening but he doesn't know what that is. They argue and Beatrice turns to walk away but is taken into custody by Erudite officials. She's taken to Jeanine's office where she recognizes her voice as the woman instructing Eric to find the Divergents at the Dauntless compound. She also realizes it was Jeanine's voice instructing her during the simulation of the aptitude test. Beatrice instinctively knows Jeanine will kill her if she discovers Beatrice is Divergent. Beatrice knows she's in danger as long as she's in Jeanine's office, so she tells lies about her successes, her reasons for joining Dauntless, and her agreement with the Erudite attitudes toward the Abnegation.
