Chapter 5 Summary

On Urras, Shevek wraps up his tourist activities and begins teaching at Ieu Eun. He is popular among the students, who are all male, well-taught, and obsessed with getting high marks. Everyone in the university community is focused completely on study. Even the married professors live at the school during the week so they will have no distractions. Shevek spends his free time writing papers and researching things such as economics and capitalism, which he finds mystifying.

Pae takes him shopping for clothes, and it is an awful experience. Shevek is disgusted by all the buying and selling and swears never to return to the "nightmare street," where many retail shops are located. Dressed in his new clothes, he finds he resembles his mother.
