Chapter 5 Summary

Melanie does not come to take her test, and that same day David gets an official notice in his mailbox that Melanie has dropped his class. This is followed by a phone call from Melanie's father, asking him to talk to Melanie to try to convince her not to drop out of school. Melanie's father says that Melanie has the highest respect for the professor, and that maybe he can talk some sense into her. Her parents are very upset that, after three years of studying, Melanie has decided to just drop out and get a job. They do not understand the reason for this. David knows that he is the reason, but promises Melanie's father to talk to her. As he calls her apartment, her cousin coldly states that Melanie does not.....
