The Cellar

The cellar is the place where Dessa is held captive after the insurrection and until her execution. The space is tight, airless, and isolated from nearly all other humans. Dessa lives in her own filth and despair for several months prior to her escape. She is only released from the cellar for her meetings with Nehemiah.

Sutton's Glen

Sutton's Glen is the plantation owned by Rufel and her disappeared husband Bertie. After Bertie abandons the farm and his family, the Glen falls largely into disrepair until a band of runaway slaves move onto the property and begin caring for the land.
