Colorado

Most of the novel takes place in an unnamed rural town in Colorado. Caitlin is kidnapped while the Courtlands are on vacation in the Rocky Mountains. Grant decides to reside in the nearby town until Caitlin is found. He lives in the home of Emmet Kinney, and Sean eventually him. Grant and Sean clash with Billy Kinney. However, Billy eventually locates the cabin in the woods in which Caitlin is being held captive.

Wisconsin

The Courtalnds normally reside in an unspecified town in Wisconsin. After Caitlin is kidnapped, Grant stays in Colorado, and Sean and Angela return to Wisconsin. Sean eventually leaves in order to lead an aimless life of driving around the country. Angela remains in Wisconsin by herself, with only her younger sister Grace to provide her consistent comfort. After Caitlin is found, the Courtlands all return to Wisconsin.
