Summary

Chapter 42 takes place in the spring following Caitlin’s kidnapping. One day, when the kidnapper was away, a hiker happened to walk by. Caitlin yelled to the hiker and explained her situation. As the hiker tried to break the lock on the door of the cabin, the kidnapper arrived and shot the hiker, killing him. In Chapter 43, Sean admires the horses that Emmet owns. Sean converses with Emmet, who tells a story about his (Emmet’s) grandfather. Emmet’s grandfather had a limp, and claimed that it was from his mother breaking his foot so that he could not be a soldier in any war. However, this story turned out to be false. Sean then tells Emmet about the dying dog that he killed. Emmet then speaks with lament about the seemingly incorrigible nature of his son Billy.
