Ed lies in the crevice to rest and, as he does so, he admires the stunning view that it affords him. The river snaking its way through the canyon about 150 feet below him is an awesome sight and Ed takes time to enjoy it, despite the fact that he is on a mission to commit a murder.

As Ed's mind wanders, he wonders whether he can actually kill the man if he sees him. Because Ed does not actually expect the man to wait around all night just to come back to the river and finish everyone off, he figures that his readiness to put an arrow into the man is born of his own expectation that he will not have to.
