Summary

Chapter 1

Rachel is angry that the Commander, Jason Chase, of Baalboden is declaring her father dead only sixty days after he left for his last mission. Jared Adams is a courier for Baalboden, tasked with taking messages, packages, and whatever else necessary between Baalboden and other city-states, most often Rowansmark. To add to Rachel’s dismay, she learns during the reading of her father’s will that he has chosen Logan McEntire, his apprentice, as her Protector instead of Oliver, a baker and family friend.
