Part 3, Chapter 4 Summary

Traveling in a third class carriage to his new accommodations at Egdon Heath Prison, Paul is given a newspaper by one of the warders responsible for escorting him from one detention center to the other. Paul finds that he has very little interest in news of the world outside, but there is a brief article about Peter Beste-Chetwynde gaining the earldom of Pastmaster as a result of the recent death of his uncle. With the article is a picture of the new earl with his mother. When Paul sees the photo of Margot, he is compelled to debate with himself again the right or wrong of his actions in regard to her.

First, he thinks that, in shielding her from prosecution, he has simply allowed her to escape the consequences of her.....
