Chapters 16-19 Summary

Chapter 16

Johnny tries out his drag costume with Maria, with makeup, heels and a wig. Uncle Sam happens to enter his bedroom at this point, catching Johnny off-guard. Johnny is expecting fallout from him wearing a dress, but Sam just asks if Johnny is gay and assures him that he can talk to Sam about any sexual identity issues.

Later that night, Sammy tells Johnny how he reminds Sammy of Johnny's father- that they were both artistic. He describes Johnny's dad as someone off the beaten track, and Johnny realizes that his mother had a fair bit to do with him trading it all in for a suit and tie. Sammy deeply misses Johnny's dad. He tells Johnny he hopes living here isn't so bad. Johnny reflects on it and admits it is not so bad at all.
