Finally Aschenbach finds a German newspaper that reports a plague in Venice, a fact that another vendor confirms. Aschenbach is torn between fleeing immediately and staying close to Tadzio.
The nearness of death does not deter Aschenbach, who remains in Venice to be close to Tadzio. The old man's attentions have become obvious now, and Tadzio's mother and governess keep a watchful eye on Aschenbach.
