Summary

Deathless Divide, by Justina Ireland, is a sequel to Death Nation. This second installment opens with A Prologue, “In Which I Arrive at Miss Preston's,” written from Jane McKeene's perspective. Jane describes being taken from her home, Rose Hill plantation in Kentucky, because of a federal law that required all black teenagers be taught to fight the shamblers, the living dead. Jane arrived at Miss Preston's School of Combat. Jane thought Miss Preston was honorable but later learned that she was – like everyone else – selfish and greedy. Jane had been highly indulged at Rose Hill and was surprised when she was lashed for taking extra corn bread without asking.
