Elesin is standing in a prison cell, in the cellar of the Residency. He is handcuffed by iron bracelets on each wrist, which are connected with chain. Two guards are in the cell with him. Elesin's bride sits on the ground outside the cell.
Pilkings enters and tries to make small talk with Elesin, but Elesin has no interest in that. Elesin blames Pilkings for preventing his death and shattering the peace of the Yoruba world. Pilkings tries to console Elesin for Olunde's behavior, but that is the one thing that Elesin does not regret. Olunde's outrage toward Elesin's failure to carry out his duty means that he is still Yoruba, and not English. Pilkings say that Olunde is coming to the prison to receive his father's blessing before he leaves.
