Summary

In Chapter 19, Thomas Starling Carlton, Lige, John Cole, Winona, Tennyson, and Rosalee reunite in the house after the fight with Petrie’s men. Lige and John Cole are shocked to see Starling Carlton. John Cole in badly injured from the fight and Thomas extracts the bullet from his wound. Tennyson announces that he killed Tach Petrie. Starling Carlton explains why he came to the farm, namely to fetch Winona. He tells them that Caught-His-Horse-First kidnapped Mrs. Neale and her two daughters. He later killed two of them, but spared Angel, the “other white child in barter” (240) as a hostage in exchange for his niece, Winona. According to Starling Carlton, Caught-His-Horse-First demands this exchange take place in order for there to be another treaty and “peace on the plains” (240). John Cole is infuriated and refuses to give Winona back, and him and Starling Carlton...
