Antoinette lies dying. Léonie spends as little time as possible with her aunt. Antoinette talks and cries out in her sleep. Her limbs fly out as she experiences a half-dreaming state under the influence of morphine. Thérèse catches her mother's hands, and her mother tells her that she is a good girl. Antoinette says something about not letting the officer see her. Thérèse stays with her mother, holding the bowl when her mother vomits. At dinner Thérèse refuses to eat because she feels ugly and overweight.
