Chapter 13, The Nightlight Summary

In the evening, the visitors and their hosts sit in the salon arguing about religion. Antoinette tells Madeleine that she must bring Léonie up as a good Catholic. Louis embraces both girls before they go up to bed. Léonie is afraid of going to her room alone. In her room, Léonie says her prayers, and Antoinette approves. Léonie notices a halo around her aunt's head, cast by the nightlight. Downstairs her mother's hair also seems to glow from the light cast from the lamp. Léonie tells Antoinette that she is afraid in this room because at night she hears people chanting and crying. Antoinette is shocked, but she tries to brush.....
