In chapter 31, Karou wakes up feeling threatened but Akiva quickly backs away with the knives and apologizes. Karou wonders about the connection she's feeling with Akiva. After going to the bakery, they fly to the top of a bell tower to watch the sun rise. As they sit there, Akiva notices her beauty and how she is trying to keep her tattoos from facing him.

Akiva thinks about his shock at how much she trusts him and she shares that her earliest memory is a positive memory of Brimstone. He asks Karou if it's her that doesn't know Brimstone and he tells her that the price for magic is pain.
