Iona Sheehan

Iona Sheehan is the novel’s protagonist and heroine. Iona is in her mid-twenties. She has just arrived in County Mayo, Ireland, from her hometown in America. Iona has short blonde hair, a pretty but not remarkable face, and an athletic body. She says whatever is on her mind without filtering for situational appropriateness, which could make her character annoying to some readers. She is very good with horses, having worked with them her whole life, and can even hear their thoughts. Iona spent her entire life feeling like she didn’t belong. She was raised by indifferent parents and always felt like an outsider. That is until her grandmother (Nan) told Iona that she had special powers, which could be traced back to the original dark witch, Sorcha.
