Carpathian

The Carpathians are very powerful beings that can shape-shift, have strong psychic abilities, and live thousands of years. They feed on human blood but don't kill their victims. The Carpathians are close to extinction due to the fact that many of their children die within the first year of life and most are male, leaving few females.

Vampires

Vampires are male Carpathians that have lived too long without a lifemate, causing them to lose color in their vision and all emotion. If a Carpathian lives too long this way, eventually he will be forced to choose suicide or to damn his own soul and turn to killing humans for the emotional high it gives. Once a Carpathian chooses to "turn," he is hunted by other Carpathians and killed.
