Chapter 16 Summary
As Peter is dying, his last words are to Daniel: "Find my family. Tell them. You go to Palestine for me. Remember..." Daniel sinks to the floor, sobbing. He cries, not just for Peter, but for everyone left without families or a country. Father holds Daniel close, while the boy sobs. He tells Daniel to go and search for Rosa, while he tries to locate Peter's family and arranges a proper funeral for the boy.
Daniel does not know his way around Lodz. He had been confined to the ghettos while he was there. He gets directions and takes a streetcar to the location. Daniel recalls watching the streetcars passing by and watching a young German soldier taking pot shots at Jews crossing over the footbridge. He wonders if the German is sitting safely at home, going unpunished for the senseless murders.
Daniel heads to his old apartment to see...
