Chapter 10 Summary

Again, Daniel finds himself on a train after spending three months in Auschwitz. This time, however, he is riding in an open boxcar. It is snowing, and the wind is fierce. It is December of 1944. The men are trying to shield each other the best that they can. The Russians are nearing Auschwitz, so the Germans are evacuating everyone out.

Daniel debates in his mind what the Germans have been thinking. He wonders why the Germans do not want any Jews left alive to bear witness to the world about what has been happening. According to the Nazi thinking, they are doing the world a favor by ridding it of this inferior race. He thinks, "Does that mean they knew all along it was wrong - and they did it anyway, some for.....
