Chapter 8 Summary

The next photo is of Erika and Rosa in front of the sewing factory in May of 1944. This photo reminds Daniel of one of their youth group meetings, where Rosa informed the group about the corruption in the sewing factory soup kitchen. The kitchen staff seemed to be pilfering the good items and only serving the workers vegetable scraps in hot water. Rosa decided that she was going to take a stand and refuse her soup. When the sewing factory workers all refused their soup the next day, the ringleaders, including Rosa, were fired. Everyone knew that if you did not have a job, you were of no use to the Nazis and would be among the first deported out.
