Chapter 7 Summary

The next photo is of Erika. She managed to get into the orchestra. Daniel recalls the family had a party afterwards. Mother fried some vegetable patties, and they had some extra bread to eat. It was a magical night, and the music took Daniel to "a place where the spirit was pure and free."

Next, he examines a picture that Father took of him with his arm around Rosa on his sixteenth birthday in March of 1943. At a youth group meeting on his birthday, important decisions were made in the event that deportations might begin again. The group decided to find hiding places and set up a warning system. The group also dreamed about becoming a community in Palestine, where they would become real pioneers and work the land.

Rosa tells Daniel about an unhappy family that lives close to her. She said the mother is dead...
