Chapter 6 Summary

The next photo Daniel examines is marked December 1942. It's a picture of Rosa. Rosa always seemed to be able to smile, even under such dire living conditions. The smile is what made her so appealing to Daniel. Rosa started a youth group and invited Erika. She told Erika to bring Daniel with her.

His first meeting with Rosa was embarrassing. His family was busy delousing their clothing, and he was sitting in his underwear, when Erika brought Rosa in to meet the family. Daniel turned bright red, and once Rosa was gone. The family had their first good laugh since leaving Frankfurt.

At the first youth group meeting Daniel attended, he and Erika took Friedrich with them. The first thing Daniel noticed, besides Rosa, was the books. He picked up The Magic Mountain. Rosa.....
