Douglas Spaulding

Douglas Spaulding, age 12, is the main character in the novel. Douglas has never traveled outside the small community of Green Town so in essence it is his whole world. He is content in this world, with a secure, loving family environment, good friends, familiar comforts, and small town intrigue. On the first day of summer, 1928, Douglas discovers that he is truly alive. With this new awareness, he keeps a journal of old rites and new adventures and revelations. The discovery has awakened all his senses and makes him appreciate his world in a new way, including the delicate balance between man and nature.
