Importance: Daisy recalls meeting her best friend, Simone Jackson, and feeling a closeness she had never known before. This is rather tragic, because the quote implies that she did not think her parents would have done anything for her, and it sounds like that was probably true, as they were completely absent from her life. The quote is also significant because of later events in the novel. Daisy was constantly looking for someone to love her - Hank Allen, Nicky, Billy - to fill the hole inside her left by her parents' neglect, and in the process, she failed to properly appreciate the love Simone had for her.
