The hidden guidebooks are symbols of Coriane’s passion. Julian sometimes hides these mechanical guidebooks in the books that he gives Coriane as gifts. Even though she is a member of Silver royalty and is not supposed to enjoy working with her hands, Coriane believes that working with her hands and building things would give her life a purpose.

Bejeweled Cane

This bejeweled cane is a symbol of past riches. Coriane’s elderly cousin Jessamine has had this cane covered with jewels she was given during her youth before House Jacos had fallen into poverty.

An Emerald

This emerald is a symbol of Harrus’ desperation to keep a good public appearance. In order to pay for his brother’s sepulcher, he is forced to sell one of the jewels from Jessamine’s cane.
