Summary

Chapter 1

Ky and Vick throw a body into the river under orders from a Society Officer. Ky says a quick poem over the body.

Chapter 2

Cassia is in a work camp preparing for the following day when she will be moved to her final job in Central. It is message day. The Officer who brought the messages tells Cassia she has a special message at the portal. Instead, Cassia is happy to discover that Xander has come to visit her.

Chapter 3

A month and a half after putting the body in the water, Ky is digging graves for those who have died in the fire raids. A group of boys want to go on the mountain to get moisture from the snow, but Ky refuses. Those boys are killed by another fire raid while they are in the open.
