Evie

Evie is the first-person narrator of the novel. Evie has lived most of her life on Winter Island, beginning with a childhood when she was raised by her erratic Dad, after her Mom abandoned them in the early years of her life. During this time, Evie and Dad frequently moved around the island, including a brief period of homelessness, and the cumulative disorientation of Evie's childhood would prove to have serious effects on her adulthood. As a teenager, Evie begins to develop a close friendship with another girl on the island, named Rook. As a young adult, Evie will briefly move to the nearby mainland California to work and study at The Sea Institute.
