Summary

The chapter “Thunder” begins with Evie’s arrival at The Sea Institute. Almost immediately after Evie’s arrival, Mom suddenly moves to Nashville, to join a band. Evie begins a relationship with Jake, a colleague at the Institute who is excited to be near the ocean after his upbringing in Kentucky. Evie eventually takes Jake to the island and introduces him to Dad, and they go visit the grounds of the Old Institute. Jake unwittingly wanders into the marijuana-growing operation, and he is brought back to Dad and Evie at gunpoint by two of the guards. Evie quickly resolves the situation, although Jake is shaken. Evie, Jake, and Dad go get fish and chips as a storm gathers nearby, and they have conversation that intentionally skips over serious subjects.
