Ava's summer in Idlewild is progressing slowly, allowing her to savor the delights of bright days and warm nights in the company of people who love her. Eddie visits regularly, and he and Joyce cook vegetarian meals that Ava is sure could convert the most confirmed carnivore. Joyce is not able to convince Eddie to attend church, but Ava is easily swayed and returns to the church of her girlhood.
