Summary

Chapter 4 takes place at the dinner party at Tyersall Park right as the tan hua flowers are about to bloom. Rachel is in awe by the lush, exotic garden. Rachel notices Nick talking to a beautiful older woman and asks Oliver who she is. Oliver replies that the woman is Jacqueline Ling, a family friend. Oliver also reveals that Jacqueline is known for “disarming men with her looks” (196). Although she is the daughter of a famous philanthropist, Jacqueline does not follow in her father’s footsteps and instead spends all of her money on couture. Oliver says that Nick’s grandmother originally wanted her son (Nick’s father, Philip) to marry Jacqueline, but he was already involved with Eleanor by then.
