pgs. 305-342 Summary

Macklin receives a request to recruit volunteers for a special mission that is described as dangerous. He had nineteen volunteers and felt that this reflected badly on him. Ninety percent of his men were willing to go on a risky assignment to get away from the parachute training program. The only two men who hadn't volunteered were Koffler and the mess sergeant James P. Cumings. He send First Sergeant George Hammersmith to talk to Koffler. Hammersmith tells Koffler that he is yellow for not volunteering.

Jack Stecker meets Ed Banning when he arrives in San Diego. Stecker tells him that eight of his people have arrived. Banning had wanted McCoy but he refused. Stecker suggests Joe Howard and Banning says he will talk to him. Stecker drives Banning to the Coronado Beach Hotel where he will spend the night.
