Anna McDonald aka Sophie Bukaran

Anna is the main character and narrator of this novel. She is the partner of Hamish and the mother of Jessica and Lizzie. Just after Anna’s mother died of cancer when Anna was seventeen, Anna was raped by four football players. Anna had gone out and gotten drunk, believing it would help to relieve her grief. Instead, the fact she was drunk worked against her at the trial. The police officer who investigated the case was also bribed to lie on the witness stand. In the end, the football players were found not guilty of rape. When a witness came forward after the trial to corroborate Anna’s story, an assassin was sent to Anna’s house to kill her. Anna survived the attack. She ran away and changed her birth name, Sophie, to Anna.
