Summary

Chapter 1:

Wild and his gang, including Hell-and-Fury, have a raucous meal at a pub after visiting the Menagerie. Wild complains that since the disappearance of both Evans and his Property (i.e. the gravel taken from the Lighthouse), his gang has not compensated with additional thieving. Incautious comments from two of the gang lead Wild to assign them an almost impossible job – the theft of a freshly hanged body.

Chapter 2:

Bess unhappily reflects on how much she gave of herself to Jack (including the stories and secret language of her parents and the Fen-Tigers) only to have him betray her and leave. Meanwhile, she notices an ad in the broadsheet (newspaper) she had been reading, advertising for women to act as searchers in plague-infested homes and ships.
