Mr. _____ asks Celie's father to marry Nettie. Their father tells Mr. _____ that Nettie is too young. He also adds that Mr. _____'s wife was killed in a scandal by her boyfriend and the name Shug Avery comes up. Celie asks her stepmother about Shug Avery, and her stepmother says that she is going to find out who she is. They find out that Shug Avery is a beautiful singer. Celie sees a picture of Shug and begins to dream about her.

When Celie's stepmother becomes ill, Celie begs for her father to take her rather than Nettie. She even goes so far as to dress up, but her father beats her for looking "trampy." Mr. _____ then returns to ask again to marry Nettie. Their father still denies Mr. _____'s request, but.....
