Fragment of a Prologue: This introduces the reader to six characters, two women and four men. The women are playing a card game; whatever card they draw, they relate to life and the people in their life. As the women continue drawing cards, they worry over the meaning of each card: they see these cards as announcements of events to occur in their lives.
