Summary

In Chapter 20, "The Bitter Root,” Tessa realizes she can look at Will without the familiar pain. At the Lightwoods', Gordon and Gideon are with Benedict. Charlotte asks him to rescind his demand that she be removed as director of the Institute. He refuses. She asks how far the demon pox rash has spread. Benedict accuses Gabriel of telling his secret. Gabriel admits it, saying he has recently learned that not all Shadowhunters are lacking in morals and principles like Benedict. Gideon says he will be a witness against Benedict. Benedict falters, saying Mortmain wants control of the London Institute through Benedict, and that he wants Tessa, though Benedict does not know why. Benedict agrees to withdraw his claim on the Institute in return for Charlotte's silence. Gideon leaves with Charlotte, but Gabriel refuses to go with him.
