Summary

In Chatper 17, "In Dreams,” Tessa reaches the edge of consciousness to hear the others talking about her, including a prediction that she will wake when her body and mind begin to heal. Tessa falls back into a deep sleep. She wakes again to see Brother Enoch removing fragments of metal from Will's back. She dreams she is in the New York apartment where Aunt Harriet is saying she is sorry she never had the courage to tell Nate the truth. Tessa says she is all alone, but Aunt Harriet says she has “more family than you think” (395). Tessa wakes again, this time hovering above Charlotte and Jem who are near Tessa's bed.
