Summary

In Chapter 12, "Blood and Water,” Nate is clearly afraid of Brother Enoch. Brother Enoch telepathically tells Tessa that Nate is completely human, and she realizes she is upset that he is not like her. Brother Enoch goes on to say he senses a power in Tessa that is greater than her ability to change. Nate begins to rant and they realize he gave Tessa over to the Magister. He says the Magister promised Tessa would become a queen, and that he knew they would kill him if he did not help by getting Tessa to come to them. She assures him she understands. Outside the room, Tessa tells Jem how upset she is that Nate is not like her because she had hoped to understand herself better though her brother. Jem says Tessa has to know about her inner self.
