Summary

This section includes six chapters. In “The Plan” Clayton goes to sleep angry after his mother has taken away his blues harp, and starts to plan (67). The next day his mother gives him another envelope to give to his teacher. When Clayton gets off the bus he tells Omar he forgot a pen and needs to get one. Clayton buys a metro card and runs home. He finds his blues harp in his mother’s drawer, packs away all his money ($17), and grabs Cool Papa’s porkpie hat. He sees the angel salt shaker on the dining room table, puts it on the floor, and smashes it with his foot. He then leaves the house.

The next chapter is “Clayton Byrd Goes Underground” (73). Clayton happily walks to the subway station. He thinks of his hazy future...
