Style

Point of View

The novel is told from the third-person and first-person points of view. It is important to remember that the entire novel is the product of a fictional writer named Everett, and the novel is nothing more than his writing journal. The two narrators who tell the largest chunks of the story are Everett and Mr. Bluementhal. Everett writes about his relationships, conversations with Pem, his thoughts on science and his interest in birds. Blumenthal's narrations are, of course, also written by Everett. For Sarah's father, the writer adopts a distinctive voice. It is the voice of an older, precise man who remembers dramatic and horrific events through the eyes of a child.
