Three other novels by Doctorow reflect his close affinity with New York: Big as Life (1966), a science fantasy about two incredibly huge figures (male and female) that appear suddenly in New York Harbor and give the inhabitants the greatest challenge of their lives; World's Fair (1985), a memoir about a boy in the 1930s growing up in New York and living in the city; and The Waterworks (1994), a mystery set in the 1800s about elderly civic leaders "playing dead" in order to promote their nefarious scheme.
