Prejudice

The various species and kinds of people tend to be very prejudiced toward each other. Maia and Simon are attracted to each other but when Maia realizes Simon is a vampire, she is repelled. Simon, who has not been a downworlder long enough to develop those prejudices, is angry at Maia's reaction. Isabelle hints at being interested in various people, mainly downworlders, and the indication is that she is doing so because her parents wouldn't approve. These alliances could be compared to that of various races and/or cultures of civilization throughout the ages. There have always been cultures, races, or even cliques that considered others beneath them.
