Chapters 8 and 9 Summary

Chapter eight is the first chapter of part two, "The Gates of Hell," which opens with a quote from Dante's "Inferno." The chapter opens with Clary dreaming. In the dream, she's a child wearing oversized pajamas. She's on the seashore with her mother and Jocelyn draws a rune on Clary's arm, using a piece of driftwood instead of a stele. She says Clary will now be protected but when Clary turns, a huge wave is bearing down on her. She wakes and finds the seashore had been a dream but there is a rune on her arm. She finds that Luke has already gone to the hospital. Simon arrives and accompanies Clary to Magnus' apartment.
