Vampirism

The center theme of "Circus of the Damned" by Laurell K. Hamilton is vampirism. Anita Blake is a vampire hunter and executioner, one who destroys vampires that break the newly-introduced laws regarding vampires and murder. There are a large number of vampires in St. Louis, where Anita works and lives.

The vampires in Circus of the Damned are broken into two basic factions. The first faction belongs to Jean-Claude, newly-appointed Master of the City of St. Louis. The section faction is headed by Mr. Oliver, a one-million-year-old vampire who wants to take over the city and make vampirism illegal again.

Although Jean-Claude is growing stronger, Mr. Oliver is the strongest vampire anyone has ever seen. The only time Anita is immune to Mr. Oliver is after she becomes Alejandro's human servant.
