Chapters 1-6 Summary

Chapter one begins with Anita Blake sitting at her desk at Animators, Inc. On the other side of the desk, two men sit in the visitors' chairs. One man is Jeremy Ruebens, a terminally unhappy man who has reluctantly come to Anita for help at the ungodly hour of 6 A.M. just as Anita is finishing her shift. Everything about Ruebens annoys Anita. The other man, Karl Inger, is a stranger. The men claim to be part of a new group, Humans First. Unlike Ruebens' former group, Humans Against Vampires, the man started a new group with the intent on killing all vampires rather than trying to repeal the law that made them legal.
