Chapter 3 Summary

Emily Mahon is grilling meat for breakfast. She has been married for twenty-five years to Brian, who is a builder with a drinking problem. She works in a hotel shop, and she has two sons, Paul and Nasey, who work with Brian. Nan, the youngest, is eighteen and starting at the university. She does not bring friends home. Everyone thinks Nan is beautiful and has since she was a child. Emily hopes Nan will marry a rich man. Emily got Brian to pay the university tuition. She calls her family for breakfast, and her two sons come in. Nan comes in looking perfect. After wrangling and mentioning his alcoholism, Nan gets a generous monthly allowance from Brian.
